York County - Personal responsibility is a broad theme, but former Virginia resident Bobby Petrocelli stresses that each choice we make determines our ultimate outcome.
The motivational speaker and author will share his message at 7 p.m. today at the Tabb High School auditorium during this year's York County Youth Week evening community meeting. The event is free and open to the public.
Youth Week is an annual York County program emphasizing the importance of character development and responsible decision-making for its high-school-aged residents. Learning new tricks - An adult gymnastics class at a York County YMCA truly is fun for all ages.
When Thanh Smith started taking gymnastics, she could barely do a handstand and couldn't do a cartwheel at all.
But Smith figured it wasn't too late to learn — even though she is 67 years old. When she heard about an adult gymnastics class at the Victory Family YMCA in York County, she jumped right in. more...

Virginia Peninsula - Families of deployed members of the National Guard and Reserve, active-duty service members on independent duty and their families, and active-duty service members and their families assigned to selected bases are now eligible for free family memberships at participating YMCAs, the Defense Department announced.
The free memberships for Guard and Reserve families will be available when the service member is deployed for a minimum of six months. The deploying service member will also be eligible for three free months before and after the deployment to help promote family participation. more... |

Smithfield, VA - Grant Intended to Help People Lose Weight. The Luter Family YMCA in Smithfield recently got $497,029 from the Obici Healthcare Foundation.
The grant will be dedicated to helping people lose weight through programs at the YMCA, as well as pre- and after-class programs in Carrollton, Hardy, Westside and Windsor elementary schools. The programs will include activities, education and memberships for children and families.
The YMCA will work with the Isle of Wight County Parks and Recreation Department to establish programs in Carrsville and Windsor and to improve the Fit Trail in Camptown and Nike Park. |
