Hampton Family YMCA Donors

The YMCA's mission compels us to make membership and program services available to ALL that want to belong and participate. Each year we raise funds through our annual charitable giving campaign called "Strong Communities." Funds raised through special events and donations provide opportunities for families and individuals to afford programs and services that they need and deserve, but simply can't afford.

In 2009 a total of $65,619 was donated to the Hampton Family YMCA. As of August 31,2009
$323,192 has been distributed to individuals and families who want to participate in our programs but need financial assistance to do so.

When individuals and businesses work together and help each other, the entire community is better off - there is more safety, less violence, and a greater sense of belonging and togetherness.

Donations Provide Valuable Services in 2009

  • $3,600 provided 120 children the ability to participate in BAM, our mind and body youth wellness class. This class teaches participants the need for physical fitness and how to make good nutritional choices.
  • The Hampton Family YMCA is the training site for the Special Olympics swim team. $3,500 provides the opportunities for participants in this valuable community program.
  • $4,500 gives teens the opportunity to develop a positive sense of self, raise academic standards, learn about career options, learn to recognize and promote excellence and to make healthy lifestyle choices.
  • $5,000 provides older adults wishing to participate in water-based aerobic classes the opportunity to participate even when they are on a fixed income and need financial assistance to participate.
  • 80 children participated in our Bright Beginning's program in 2009 - this program provides new school shoes, clothing and a backpack of supplies to local children. Volunteers are paired with the children to shop on planned shopping days. This year we shopped at J.C. Penney. $12,000 went to this program that gives more than new clothes - it raises self esteem, excitement to begin the school year, and self confidence in the children.
  • The Hampton Family YMCA collaborates with the Hampton City School system to provide YMCA membership, child care, and summer camp to 30 at risk children. $50,000 (21st Century Grant) provides for this program.
  • The YMCA Guardian program allows over 2,000 families and individuals in our community who cannot afford full membership fees the opportunity to enhance their family bond and promote a healthier lifestyle through a reduced rate based on their income. $323,190 provides for these individuals and families.

Testamonials

The YMCA influences lives - "We are experiencing hard times like many families everywhere. My husband and I almost lost our home because work is so slow and making ends meet with our four children is extremely hard right now. We wanted to enroll our seven year old in the YMCA After School program, but couldn’t afford the weekly fees. We now receive a Guardian scholarship and our daughter enjoys a safe and fun program after school. The staff has been very supportive helping out with homework; they take the time to help each child. Some days she just doesn’t want to leave." Thank you - a YMCA Member

"I am the oldest of four children, it is sometimes very difficult to find a quiet, peaceful place to focus on schoolwork. However, the YMCA offers just that. Being a member of the Y gives me a chance to catch up with friends and meet new ones. They allow me to reach out from my usual social “bubble” and interact with other members of our community. It has truly been a blessing to be a member of the YMCA. Whether working out in the fitness room, playing volleyball in the gym, or going for a swim in the pool, the Y has something to offer each member of my family. I am very grateful that I am able to be a part of such a wonderful organization." -Melanie
