About

The YMCA is a vital asset to the communities it serves. We work together with communities to provide programs like Before and After School Child Care, Preschool, Day Camps, Swimming and Swim Lessons, Family Activities, Sports for adults and children, Art programs, Health and Exercise, specialty programs for teens and older adults, and many more programs that help make that community an even nicer place to live and raise families. All YMCA programs are developed around the core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.

Everyone Is Welcome

What sets the YMCA apart is that we make membership, programs, services, and facilities available regardless of a family or individual's ability to pay the standard membership and program fees. If you want to participate at the YMCA and feel you are not financially able to do so, please apply to our Guardian Program. We do not want you or your family to be excluded from the benefits that the YMCA has to offer.

A Message From Our President And Ceo

Dear YMCA friends and supporters:

There is always a sense of excitement at the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA, and 2009 was no exception. Despite challenging times, the YMCA had a great year thanks to the vigilant and spirited work of our leadership team, the executives, employees and dedicated donors and volunteers at each of our fourteen branches. We focused internally this year, developing new and better systems for customer service and safety.  Branches developed gathering places where members and guests can sit, read the paper, or just hangout and talk with a new friend. New programs were added and schedules restructured to be more family friendly. We reviewed and improved our safety protocols for handling life threatening emergencies and then we practiced, practiced and practiced more to make our YMCA as safe as possible for members and guests.

In 2009, over 699,600 infants, toddlers, preschoolers, pre-teens, young adults and mature adults participated in YMCA programs. Our YMCA accomplished or exceeded all goals established in the 2007-2009 strategic plan which was reflected in the growth and retention of our membership. We now serve 53,720 individuals, and retention increased 2% over 2006. Nearly 5% of our members now volunteer; and we have doubled the number of members making planned gifts through our Heritage Club.

We also recognize that mental and spiritual health is equally as important for our families and community. Our YMCA launched a new program this year called Journey to Freedom which is an 8-week group study that lays the foundation for transformation and encourages participants to create a personal plan of action to bring about successful and lasting change. We created a devotion manual designed to deliver a consistent message for our 12 day camps; a message that challenged our campers to not only demonstrate the values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility but to understand why these values are important in their everyday lives.

We believe that life is a journey and that our mission at the YMCA is to make that journey the best it can be; it has happened this way at the Y for over 160 years. It starts with infants and toddlers experiencing tender and loving care in our child care programs. As toddlers become preschoolers, they learn values through team play. School Age and Day Camp offer children the chance to explore new environments and make friends. Resident Camp and Leaders’ Club present young teens their first leadership experience and for many is their first opportunity to give back to their community. The Y provides summer jobs to college students as camp counselors, lifeguards, and School Age counselors; and when the college years are over, the YMCA is still there to offer a professional career for some and volunteer opportunities for many. Marriage and children follow, and those whose journey has been especially meaningful will involve themselves on our boards, giving back to our community through volunteering and philanthropy.

Please read through our annual report. When you do, we hope you’ll come away understanding the role the YMCA plays in so many individual journeyseach and every day. The YMCA is a place for families, children and adults to come because we are a community that genuinely cares about each other. Our success is attributed directly to those individuals who are willing to give their time, talents and treasure so others may have the same joy that they share. Thank you for the part you played in changing so many lives this year and for your commitment to the journey.
