For me growing up, August was when my mom took my sister and me to buy new shoes, school supplies, and maybe a new outfit. She often made our clothes; both my sister and I look back and laugh at them now. Mom tried so hard to make ends meet, (to be honest I can't totally blame her for the look because she always included us in picking out the patterns and fabric, but honestly the clothes weren't exactly the latest style) and thank goodness she had the skills! But Laurel and I would mark on the calendar and count the days until we could go buy our new shoes and school supplies.

I don't have to tell you that my sister and I gained so much more than just those new shoes, just having them on our feet and wearing those new (lovingly sewn) clothes gave us so much confidence and pride in our appearance that the first day of school was a bright one. That's what YMCA BRIGHT BEGINNINGS does for nearly a thousand kids from area communities - including yours - every year. If you want to help a child by volunteering to shop or donating funds ($150 sponsors a child), please contat Leslie Bryant at (757) 223-7925 ext.207, or call your local YMCA. We shop in August, so hurry!
